WHAT ARE BREAST IMPLANTS?
Breast implants are prosthesis to enlarge a woman’s
breasts. They are designed to improve the shape and appearance of breasts
and they help especially after the damage of years and changes after
There are several reasons to perform a breast augmentation surgery:
Volume of breast implants ranges between 120ml and 850ml and their texture, shape and duration varies as well. There are two types of breast implants. Saline-filled implants and silicone implants.
Saline filled breast implants are made of a silicone rubber shell filled with sterile saline after the implant has been placed on the breast. Very good results can be obtained with this type of implants, however there are some disadvantages. Saline filled breast implants’ texture may not be as natural some wrinkles can be present. They can be evident to the eye or by touch.
SILICONE FILLED BREAST IMPLANTS
Natural Belle uses Silicone breast implants. This type of breast implants has been studied and approved by the FDA since 2005, and it is the most common worldwide. Silicone filled breast implants are available in different sizes which allows surgeons to choose the most appropriate size for each patient.
Silicone filled implants are made of a silicone shell filled with a fixed amount of silicone gel before the surgery. Most recent studies have demonstrated that silicone filled beast implants are better in terms of safety and effectiveness. They have also demonstrated a low rate of capsular contracture and breast implant rupture.
BREAST IMPLANT PLACEMENT AT NATURAL BELLE
There are two types of breast implant placement, sublglandular and submuscular.
Subglandular: Subglandular breast implant placement refers to placing the implant between the breast tissue and the breast muscle. This type of placement seems to provide a good aesthetical result, but it is not recommendable in patients with little breast tissue since ripples and wrinkles can form under the skin. With subglandular breast implant placement the time for recovery is usually shorter and less painful. Conversely there is a higher possibility for capsular contraction therefore it is not recommended for smokers or patients with previous breast surgeries.
Submuscular: Submuscular placement refers to placing the breast implant below the chest muscle. With submuscular breast implants the surgery can take longer, the recovery period might be more painful and reintervention procedures can be more difficult. On the other hand, there are several advantages to this type of breast implant placement. Breast implants are less evident, there are fewer chances for a capsular contraction and breast tissue is more visible during a mammography.
Once you and your breast augmentation surgeon have decided upon the type of placement you have to decide on the type of incision to use. There are three types of incisions that include:
Periareolar Incision: A periareolar incision is performed along the areola’s outline. This breast augmentation incision is generally placed in the inferior region of the areola. This type of incision produces a less evident scar compared to other incision types and especially in patients that have less pigmented areola. It can cause some inconveniences during breast feeding.
Inframammary Incision: This type of breast implant incision is placed in the inframmamary fold. (The proximity of the crease where the breast and chest come together). It is the most frequent because it allows precision when placing the natural looking breast implants. There are less problems with this incision when breast feeding.
Transaxillary incision: The transaxillary inicision is performed in the armpit. The advantage of a transaxilary incision is that it does not produce any visible scars in breasts.
